Three Inspiring Non-Traditional Attorneys
The legal profession is not exactly known for being progressive and the examples of “successful” attorneys that permeate the media tend to follow the traditional mold – wear suit, work in tall office building, work many hours, get paid handsomely, drink to forget, repeat. Of course on TV, the attorneys all manage to look sexy while at the office at 1AM, a feat I’ve yet to see replicated in real life.
Of course, not all attorneys fit the mold. Not all attorneys practice law. Not all attorneys practice at big firms. Not all attorneys make a lot of money. Not all attorneys are boring. J Yet, it can be hard to find examples of non-traditional attorneys so it’s always a delight when I do. These are three very different attorneys who don’t fit the traditional mold that I find inspiring:
Amelia Boone.

Bad-ass pro-level obstacle racer and runner who continues to practice law full-time (with Apple, last I heard) despite a heavy schedule of training, racing, commentating, and being interviewed. After rising to athletic fame as a consistent podium finisher, she was sidelines by an injury and after a long recovery, she has recently begun racing again. On social media and her blog, she honestly shares about her journey and the lessons learned which transcend athletics.
Jodie Ettenberg.

Attorney turned traveling foodie. Jodie left her New York City attorney gig on a “one-year” travel-hiatus ten years ago…and never returned. Her blog embraces the long-form article styles (which I love) and includes resources for seriously any type of traveler – solo traveler, female traveler, celiac traveler, attorney traveler…and so on.
Jodie is currently battling serious health issues with debilitating pain with an enviable amount of grace and gratitude. I’ve been hooked on watching her daily walks and small cooking adventures on Instagram and mentally cheering her on
Jedidiah Jenkins.

Jedidiah is an author, writer/editor/creator of Wilderness magazine, and co-creator of MyByta, reusable mug. I’ve been following him for a while now and had no idea that he was an attorney until I read a bio about him yesterday. Like many, he started practicing but felt pulled by the desire to do…something else.
Jedidiah’s writing is addictively insightful – it so often articulates those important feelings that the rest of us mere mortals struggle to put into words.
