Title Image: 5+ Best PDX Donut Shops That Aren't Voodoo

Looking for the best donuts in Portland, Oregon?  You’re in the right spot!

The discussion around donuts in Portland, Oregon often involves the question, “Is VooDoo Donuts worth visiting?”  Some will answer that “VooDoo is overrated,” or “you can get them anywhere now,” as VooDoo locations have popped up across the country.

Personally, I  think VooDoo’s donuts are fun and tasty.  If you’re interested, you should try one!   At worst, you can now weigh in on the debate of whether they are “worth the hype.”

BUT don’t stop your Portland donut exploration at VooDoo.  Make sure to visit Portland’s other beloved donut shops – there are a lot!  The following list will get you started, and a quick Google search for the “best Portland donuts” will take you even further.

5 Can’t-Miss Portland, OR Donut Shops

In no particular order, here are five of the best donut shops in Portland, Oregon based on my own experience and the adoration of locals.  Check their websites for up-to-date hours.  Some close in the early afternoon while others are open long enough to grab post-dinner donuts.

Fills

What to get: maple bacon butterscotch

Fills is known for its creative Berliner style donuts that include all-year favorites and seasonal selections.  In addition to the usual sweet donut selections, they have savory options like the “Everything Bagel” donut, which is a tasty mash-up of donut and bagel flavors.

Pro tip: In addition to donuts, Fills is quickly becoming known for its simple, affordable brioche bun burgers.  They’re located in Lake Oswego which is technically “Portland-area,” not Portland proper but Fills donuts are too good to not include on this list.

Delicious Donuts

What to get: classic glazed

Delicious Donuts is classic donut shop vibes in the best way.  Unfussy counter service including the classic donut display, affordable prices, + of course [damn] Delicious Donuts!

They’ve got all of the styles: raised (yeast) donuts, old-fashioned, cake donuts, and “big” donuts (fritter, cinnamon roll, and bear claw).  I have not tried the fritter yet but after seeing it ranked by one news article as Portland’s #1 donut, it’s officially on my list.

But BE WARNED, their deliciousness is well-known and they close when they sell out so plan accordingly.

Pip’s Original Donuts and Chai

What to get: Mix & match + Chai

Pip’s is a frequent flyer on local and national best donut lists because they’re unique and delicious and fried to order, which means you always get a fresh donut.  Pip’s exclusively serves mini-donuts flavored with toppings like honey, Nutella, cinnamon sugar, and sea salt.

Their seasonal donuts tend to take the flavors to the next level with offerings like sweet potato pie and coconut custard cream.  Their mini-donuts are served in sets of at least four and you can mix and match flavors!

P.S. Don’t forget to grab a chai, there’s a reason chai is also in the business’s name.

Blue Star Donuts + Coffee

What to get: Seasonal flavor

With 5 Portland-area locations and an airport cart, Blue Star is a fan favorite that is easy to find.  They offer brioche, old-fashioned, and even vegan cake donuts so most donut lovers can find something to fit their fancy.

My personal favorite is the Apple Cider Fritter, and if you like moist decadent fritters go for that.  But, I know fritters can be devise – you either love ’em or have no interest in ’em – so my pick for most likely to please (and be something you won’t find elsewhere) go for one of the seasonal selections.

Doe Donuts (vegan)

What to get: Portland Fog

Doe Donuts serves up innovative vegan donuts with all house-made ingredients that are adored by vegans and non-vegans alike.  Doe Donuts offers a number of year-round staples like strawberry milk, birthday cake, and french toast plus monthly seasonals that you simply are not going to find anywhere else.

At the time of writing this, Doe’s seasonal flavors include watermelon salt and a savory donut with vegan beef and shredded cheese curls!   Not feeling donuts?  You can grab flavorful vegan ice cream at Doe.

Other Notable Portland Donut Shops

What the best donut shop in Portland is will always be controversial, in large part because we all have different taste preferences. If you don’t like cake donuts (full disclosure: not my personal fav) you’re probably not going to like a shop that only sells cake donuts.

All of that to say, here are some other notable Portland donut shops that get a lot of R-E-S-P-E-C-T for you to consider checking out.  Some are still on my “to-try” list, and others I already love & just didn’t include above so this wouldn’t be a 50-page article. 🙂

Except for summer months, two things you should always have handy in Portland, OR are a water-resistant jacket and water-resistant shoes/boots.  An REI puffer, Columbia rain jacket, and Blundstone boots are my go-to’s.  In summer, swap in cute functional sneakers for city walking.
