Everything I Packed for a Week of Camping and Hiking in Banff
Ok, while “a week in Banff” is technically true (we were physically there on 7 days), but on the last day of our girls’ hiking and camping trip just got up and left Banff but the chosen title is a heck of a lot catchier than “Everything I Packed for 6 Days of Camping and Hiking in Banff.”
Without further, ado, here’s everything I packed and my notes. Hopefully, it will help you with your own packing for your next camping or hiking adventure.
Footwear & Clothing
Keen Women’s Marshall Hiking Shoe

One of my favorite outdoor items have had them for years. Lighter and more mobile than a full boot but still provides the needed bottom grip and foot protection.
3 Pair of Wool Socks
Buy on Amazon Here
One REI kids pair because they were cheaper. Two pair Smartwool. One I already had. Another I bought on sale.
Two Pair of Leggings
One pair of old Athleta leggings and one pair of Bold City Art leggings. Bold City Art is the business of the friend I was hiking with so I had to represent. And we got lots of compliments. Would have been fine with one pair of leggings.
North Face Women’s Aphrodite 2.0 Hiking Pants
Buy on Amazon Here
After getting very close to throwing a temper tantrum because I couldn’t find hiking pants that fit, I found these at a local outdoor store in size 0. I originally something a little thicker but fell in love with these after wearing them in Banff. They’re comfy, easy to move in, and the drawstring waist means they actually fit! You could easily layer them with leggings underneath on colder days.
Black Diamond Crux Hoody
Buy on Amazon Here
Used this as a mid-layer. Wore it everyday. One of the cuter outdoor items I own.
5 Tank Tops + Two Sports Bras
Wore them all but didn’t need them all. They take up very little room though so figured why not. 4 from Athleta. 1 from The North Face.
One NorthFAKE Jacket
Buy Real North Face Jackets on Amazon Here
Bought this is Vietnam when I realized that Hanoi, Vietnam is pretty far north and does not have quite the tropical climate that I had packed for on my Asia trip. Used it everyday on hikes and in town. It cut the chill in the mornings and evenings and worked well to keep me dry when we encountered some light rain. A real North Face jacket would probably serve just as well. 🙂
Inside Fleece from Columbia Ski Jacket
Took the inside fleece part out of an old ski jacket and used it around the campsite on chillier nights and mornings and put it on while sleeping on the coldest night. Didn’t need the top layer of the jacket because I had my trusty North Fake.
Street Clothes
Brought the following non-hiking clothes. Could have gone with fewer but was nice to look cute(-ish) when going into town and on travel days.
Jeans
Jean shorts
Non-hiking tank top
Plaid long sleeve button up
Athleta dress (wrinkle-free and all-in-one outfit, even a built in bra!)
Target romper (another all-in-one outfit)
Flip flops
Flat Walmart closed toe shoes
Bathing suit
Board shorts
One Set of Pajamas
For pajama bottoms I wore REI kids long underwear tights in teal. Kids were a little cheaper. Super comfy and perfect weight. On top, an old Athleta warm long sleeve. And around the campsite Tillage pants, which I wore over tights to sleep on the coldest night.
Nike Running Gloves
These were good at the campsite on the chilly mornings. Body was fine but hands seemed to get painfully cold.

Camping and Hiking Gear
Kelty 3 Person Tent. (+Rain Fly)
Buy on Amazon here.
Bought this years ago on sale. Can’t remember the exact model but the one shown is similar. Easy set-up, rain fly kept us dry on the one night we had light rain.
Bear Grylls Mummy Sleeping Bag (30-Degree)
Buy on Amazon here.
Got this as a present a number of years back. Certainly is not super-light gear and takes up a fair amount of space in my backpacking pack but works great for car camping. Keeps me warm which is more than I can say for the cheap sleeping bag I had before it.
Moon Lence Sleeping Pad
Buy on Amazon here.
Was stoked on this sleeping pad – rolls up small, lightweight, and comfortable – until it sprung a leak and I woke up touching the ground. My friend I was camping with had the same one in orange (and the corresponding pillow) and had no problems and loved hers. Perhaps just bad luck on my part?
Rainleaf Travel Towel
Buy on Amazon here.
Bought it for Thailand a few years ago and did not end up needing it on that trip. Was a great shower towel for this camping trip because it takes up virtually no room and dries very quickly so no soggy towels! Worth it for under $15.
Petzl Tikka Headlamp
Buy on Amazon here.
Another oldie but goodie. The good thing about most brand name outdoor gear is it lasts! Over six years old, have sweated all over it while running, and still no signs of it wearing out. Sunset isn’t until 9:30ish in summer in Banff (didn’t know that before) so really only needed this for middle of the night bathroom trips.
Summit 4L Lightweight Dry Sack
Buy on Amazon here.
Bought this solely to protect the love of my life, my camera (and lenses). Threw my camera, two lenses, and my cellphone inside when we got some light rain. Probably could have gone one side larger. Folds up small when not in use and can clip around backpack. Like the green color (also realizing I seem to like green and pink for outdoor gear)
Packing Items
CamelBak Women’s Helena 22 Hydration Pack
Buy Newer Model on Amazon Here
As discussed in this earlier post, I LOVE this bag. It fits a ton – including my camera and multiple lenses. Used it with the 3L water bladder it comes with on every day hike we went on. The only day I ran out of water was with about 30-minutes left on our longest hike.
Osprey Ariel 65 Women’s Hiking Backpack
Buy it on Amazon Here
Another of the three bags I use for 95% of my travel. Packed the vast majority of my gear for the trip in this including the Kelty tent which is not small! Hauls a lot and the female specific design really helps distribute weight so that it’s comfortable.
Travel Packing Cubes (6 pieces)
Buy it on Amazon Here
Bought these in December of 2016 and have used for every trip of every kind since and even to divide up items in my backpack when doing to the beach. They make it so much easier to find items and stay organized on the road. They are just now showing some wear. Easily one of my best purchases ever…and even better that they are only about $10.

Three camera lenses
