Simple Bar at Tijuana, Mexico's Nano Craft Brewery Funes Cervez Artesanal

I love trying different craft beers.  I love it even more when the craft beers are local.  I love it even more when the brewery is not well-known outside of the city/state/region.  It just makes it the experience feel more special.

All my craft beer tasting wishes came true when we stopped at Funes Cerveza Artesanal, a Tijuana nano-brewery, during Tuesday’s day trip to Mexico. (Living in San Diego is wild – it still feels surreal to be able to take a day-trip to another country).  I had seen it on a map the night before and was intrigued because I hadn’t been or heard of it.

I was not disappointed – although, let’s be honest, I rarely am when it comes to craft beer.  The best way to describe Funes is simply great beer.  There is no fluff.  No witty beer names.  No ultra-modern décor. Funes lets the beer speak for itself.

Funes is conveniently located between Telefonica Gastro Park, Tijuana’s hip food truck heaven, and Avenida Revolucion, the city’s main tourist street, which makes it an easy stop on a walk between the two. Though it is on a side street off so you do need to know the street to turn-on ahead of time or you’ll pass it.  It’s a non-descript, bare bones open air building with brewing operations in the back and the bar and brewing supply store in front.

There are eight taps of Funes brews and a refrigerator of bottles from other US and Mexican craft breweries.  The taps are labeled with pieces of paper stating the type of beer. I had a stout, my travel buddy had an IPA which I sampled.  We really enjoyed both.  Without naming names, I’ll say that I thought they were better than some of the more well-known Tijuana craft breweries.

Bottom line: If you like craft beer and a local experience, I highly recommend checking out Funes Cerveza Artesanal on your next trip to Tijuana, Mexico.
