My Favorite Women’s Trail Hiking Shoes
The first time I ever bought hiking footwear was in preparation for backpacking part of the Appalachian Trail, which also happened to be my first time camping (truth). I was stoked to have some real gear…until I hiked in them. They were heavy and uncomfortable for me.
After some research, I discovered and converted to hiking shoes, instead of boots, and have never looked back. There are some situations – think snow, really, really wet terrain, and some mountaineering treks – where you really do need a boot. For everything else, including my two-solo 14ers, I LOVE hiking shoes. These three of my favorites:
KEEN Women’s Targhee Vent Hiking Shoes
Why I Love Them: Breathable trail shoe with instant comfort, no “breaking in,” required. Nice wide toe-box – no smushed toes. Nice and grippy without being too heavy. Affordable price point.
I Use Them For: Hikes of all distances in dry weather and terrain esp. when its warm out. They’re a very popular shoe and also come in a waterproof version and boot version.
Brooks Women’s Mazama 2
Why I Love Them: Lightweight trail runner that has enough grip for hiking and running on various terrain. Some other trail runners I’ve tried can be downright slippery on anything other than packed dirt.
I Use Them For: Light hikes and trail runs that aren’t too rocky
The North Face Ultra Fastpack IV FUTURELIGHT
Why I Love Them: Best of all worlds. Natural lightweight but durable, tough enough soles to tackle bigger hikes. Breathable but have a waterproof membrane.
I Use Them For: Hikes of all types and terrains.
Other Popular Hiking Shoes
These women’s trail hiking shoes are the ones I personally love and use the most. However, I know everyone has their own preferences and it is certainly not a one-sized-fits-all proposition. If you’re looking for other options, the brands I hear people rave about most for trail hiking shoes are:
Keen
Salomon
LaSportiva
Merrell
Shop for trail hiking shoes at Moosejaw, REI, Amazon, or your favorite online retailer! If you have a favorite trail shoe, feel free to share it in the comments below.
